Pandemic cancels Veterans Day parade

High Point Enterprise - 10/8/2020

Oct. 7--HIGH POINT -- The organizer of the annual High Point Veterans Day Parade is canceling the event that was to take place next month, but still encourages High Pointers and others to honor those who served in the military.

Parade organizer Don Webb, a Navy veteran, told The High Point Enterprise that the parade won't be staged out of concern for COVID-19.

"We waited as long as possible to make this difficult decision," Webb said Tuesday. "This would have been our 37th annual parade to honor our veterans. In view of the continued restrictions on public gatherings, it is best for the safety of all to consider other ways to honor our veterans this year."

The High Point Veterans Day Parade has evolved into one of the largest in the state.

The parade was launched by Marine Corps veteran Jack Austin, who rode his bright red motorcycle up and down Main Street while carrying an American flag. Austin died nine years ago.

Webb told The Enterprise that he hopes the lack of parades won't deter people from expressing gratitude. Veterans Day is Nov. 11.

"It is also a time to talk to our neighbors, friends and family about those who served us all when they wore the uniform for our country. Thanks to all who served, and continue to serve," Webb said.
