Jill Biden to meet with veterans, military families in Fayetteville on Tuesday

Fayetteville Observer - 10/5/2020

Oct. 5--The wife of former Vice President Joe Biden will visit Fayetteville on Tuesday to meet with veterans and military families and to hold a "Get Out the Vote" event, campaign officials said.

Jill Biden will come to Fayetteville after holding a rally encouraging people to vote in Greenville earlier in the day, according to a statement released Monday by the Biden campaign.

"Later in the day, she will travel to Fayetteville ... where she will meet with veterans and military families and share how a Biden-Harris administration would honor their sacrifice," the statement said. "Following this event, she will join a second Get Out the Vote rally, encouraging local voters to make a plan to vote and vote early."

Joe Biden, who served as vice president in the Obama administration, is the Democratic nominee for president. The visit to Fayetteville will be the first for his campaign, which is making a strong effort to reach out to voters connected to the military.

Veterans and military spouses have spoken at several virtual events sponsored by the campaign. Last week, the campaign launched a North Carolina Veterans and Military Families Leadership Council that includes several retired officers and sergeants major. State Sen. Kirk DeViere of Fayetteville is on the council.

Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who served as commander of Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, endorsed Biden on Thursday. McChrystal also served as a battalion commander in the 82nd Airborne Division and as chief of staff for the 18th Airborne Corps.

Biden is leading President Trump in national polls and in most battleground states.

Trump, who is in Walter Reed National Military Center after testing positive for COVID-19 last week, held a rally at the Fayetteville Regional Airport on Sept. 19.

A Trump campaign spokeswoman said in response to McChrystal's endorsement of Biden that the president is focusing on putting America first, winning abroad and bringing troops home safely. Trump is keeping his promise to stop endless wars, she said.

Details of Jill Biden's visit to Fayetteville have not been released.
