CAFÉ working to start gang prevention task force

Sep. 5—WENATCHEE — A local nonprofit is looking to establish a gang prevention task force, but much work is left before the group gets going.

In the wake of the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in Wenatchee, the Community for the Advancement of Family Education (CAFÉ) wants to form a task force and find gang prevention strategies. CAFÉ is partnering with Northwest Family Services Institute.

Wenatchee police said in court documents filed in Chelan County Superior Court that the two people involved in the deadly Aug. 12 shooting were both gang affiliated.

CAFÉ wrote in a news release that it's looking for partners to join their endeavor, like community leaders, representatives from local law enforcement, educators, social workers, or concerned citizens.

Alejandra Alejandrez, CAFÉ office coordinator, said some of the ideas they hope will come of the task force would be about figuring out efficient ways to engage the youth. This could include community engagement, educational programs, mentoring initiatives and other collaborations.

Much of the structure and future plans of the group are still a work in progress, Alejandra said. But at this time, CAFÉ is "getting the word out" about their plan.
