Lothian Ruritan takes military veterans fishing; Around South County

Capital - 7/28/2018

Every year, the Lothian Ruritan Club takes veterans living in the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home out on the Chesapeake Bay for a day of fishing.

On a beautiful day last week, 12 heroes from Charlotte Hall spent the day fishing. Anne Arundel County Police Department provided an escort from Charlotte Hall to Skippers Pier Restaurant in Deale. Sirens from the Deale Volunteer Fire Department saluted the bus load of veterans as they arrived.

The veterans, with their aids and bus driver, were served breakfast sandwiches and coffee prior to boarding their charter fishing vessels, which were volunteered for the occasion.

Upon returning to the Skippers Pier dock, the veterans, aids, driver, captains and mates were served hot meals and cold drinks by Skippers Pier owner John Hiser, chef Jessica and restaurateur David Rosage. Captains and mates cleaned and filleted the fish for the veterans to take home for a fish fry.

A fresh water spring at Charlotte Hall, said by Native Americans to have medicinal qualities, can be traced back to 1698 and is thought to be the site of the first hospital in the New World. In 1774, Queen Charlotte founded Charlotte Hall School which, until it closed in 1976, was one of the oldest educational institutions in the United States.

Around the 1850s, the school's curriculum added military training for the students. After a 200-year history as a boarding military school for boys, Charlotte Hall School closed in 1976 due to financial difficulties.

The state of Maryland purchased the property from the Charlotte Hall School in 1977 and began the planning phase of Maryland's first and only veterans home. The doors opened Jan. 29, 1985, with a mission of "Serving those who served."
