Breakfast brings veterans together

Tribune-Democrat - 6/29/2018

June 29--Whether the stories are traumatic or funny, from recent times or decades ago, deeply emotional or just quick little anecdotes, there are some things veterans know only other former military personnel who shared their experiences will truly understand.

Bringing them together -- to tell those stories -- is the mission of the Veterans Breakfast Club.

On Wednesday, the organization, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2018, will hold one of its regular breakfast gatherings at Conemaugh Township Fire Department, 1942 Kring St., Tire Hill. Veterans are invited to come and speak in the casual environment or simply listen to their fellow comrades.

"It's so simple, yet so unique," said Lauren Del Ricci, the club's director of development and communication. "We believe there's a power in storytelling."

The event, which is scheduled to take place from 9 to 11 a.m., is open to veterans who will get a free breakfast donated by Richland American Legion Post 849.

Anybody interested in attending can contact Veteran Community Initiatives by calling 255-0355 or stopping by its office in the Hiram G. Andrews Center, 727 Goucher St., Upper Yoder Township.

VCI also will be presenting its Ed Cernic Sr. Community Support Recognition Award, previously known as the Veteran Support Recognition Award, which is given to members of the community who assist veterans.
