Stuart News - 4/18/2018

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY -- A World War II veteran recently received $5,500 in assistance from the Veterans Council of Indian River County's Upward American Veterans program and the Military Officers Association of America for needed home repairs.

Harry Lamb, a disabled WWII veteran and his wife Gladys could not afford or had the ability to physically complete repairs needed to make their home liveable. They learned about and applied to the Upward American Veterans program for assistance with the repairs.

Currently there is a waiting list of 15 veteran homeowners who require repairs. There is an estimated $102,000 worth of work to be done for these 15 veterans in Indian River County. The Veterans Council is seeking additional funding to meet these current needs.

The issues that needed to be addressed for the Lambs included a broken refrigerator, two non-functioning water heaters, leaking roof, broken window, water damaged bathroom, inoperable washer, no available dryer vent and other unsafe conditions in the home.

Veterans Council President, Col. Darryle (Sam) Kouns visited the Lamb home. He said, "No person, and especially no veteran should have to live under such poor conditions."

The UAV Committee pledged $3,000 toward the work and Military Officers Association of America chapter President, Lt. Col. Jim Rannazzisi donated an additional $2,500 toward the Lamb family's home repairs.
