Tribune-Democrat - 2/2/2019

Feb. 02--Veteran Community Initiatives has a full slate of activities to honor and assist veterans planned for the upcoming year.

On Friday, the organization held a press conference to publicly announce dates for the Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 10), Cambria County Hero Hike (May 18), Veterans Breakfast Club (July 4), Salute to Veterans (Oct. 14), Veterans Day Parade (Nov. 11) and Cambria County Veterans Court graduation (May 28 and Nov. 12).

Also, on March 29, VCI, Conemaugh Valley Veterans and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 364 will hold the 3rd Annual Vietnam Era Veterans Celebration. The event, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. inside 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial, will include a presentation, refreshments, military memorabilia display, music from the band Three of Hearts and an opportunity for veterans to socialize with each other.

"It's going to be a fun day where veterans can extend their camaraderie," VCI Director Tom Caulfield said during a press conference at Hiram G. Andrews Center in Upper Yoder Township.

VCI also honored three recipients of its Edward Cernic, Sr. Support Recognition Award -- Debra Balog, Mike Stohon and Shawn Kaufman.

"It's really humbling to be honored by Ed Cernic Sr.," Balog said. "What a wonderful man, a great leader, certainly one of the biggest advocates for our veterans in our community and really across Pennsylvania. Not only that, but he was a great leader in our community and a great ambassador for our community."
