Meuser named to House Education & Labor, Veterans' Affairs, Budget committees

Times Leader - 1/24/2019

Jan. 24--WILKES-BARRE -- New Congressman Dan Meuser announced Wednesday that he will serve on the House Education and Labor, Veterans' Affairs, and Budget committees during the 116th Congress.

Meuser, R-Dallas, will be one of a select few freshmen members to serve on three standing House committees.

"Each of these committees gives me a chance to roll up my sleeves and get things done for the people of the 9th District," Meuser said. "All three committees are uniquely important to the prosperity and quality of life of hardworking Pennsylvanians."

--The House Committee on Education & Labor oversees federal programs and initiatives dealing with education at all levels. It also holds jurisdiction over labor policies, workforce development, job training and worker retirement security issues.

"Workforce development, job training, expanding access to post-high school education -- these are all issues critically important to 9th District middle class families," Meuser said. "The Education & Labor Committee will be ground zero for Congress' efforts to make sure American workers have the education and skills they need for the jobs of the 21st century."

--The House Committee on Veterans' Affairs oversees the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA hospitals and medical care, veterans' benefits, cemeteries, job training programs and other veteran-related initiatives. Meuser said the committee has a long history of bipartisan legislative achievement.

"Tens of thousands of 9th District residents who have served our nation in uniform rely on the VA for medical care, benefits, and a host of other services," Meuser said. "VA medical facilities like the hospitals in Lebanon and Luzerne counties, as well as clinics in Schuylkill and Berks counties, provide critical needed care to thousands of Pennsylvanians. This committee will enable me to be their voice and help ensure our veterans are getting the level of customer service and treatment they deserve."

--The House Budget Committee is responsible for setting a framework of annual spending, revenue, deficit and debt levels. The committee also tracks the budgetary effects of legislative action.

"I am looking forward to being a voice for fiscal restraint and demonstrating the fiscal responsibility Americans want to see," Meuser said. "I'm committed to bringing our spending in line with revenues and ensuring future generations of Americans are not saddled with the burden of massive debt."
