Paint-Nite brings in funds and raises awareness on mental health in the community

Agassiz Observer - 5/4/2017

This week has been designated as the 66 th Annual Mental Health Week by the Canadian Mental Health Association. In 1951, this week was set aside by CMHA to raise awareness regarding mental health issues.

Locally, a grassroots group of dedicated volunteers is working hard in preparation for the 6 th annual Agassiz Harrison Walk to Defeat Depression. This event is run under the Mood Disorders Society of Canada, which has evolved to become one of Canada’s best connected mental health non-government organizations.

The Defeat Depression Campaign is a national fundraising campaign designed to allow individuals and organizations to raise funds in support of local mental health programs and services.

A very successful Paint Nite fundraiser held Apr. 21 and sponsored by the group raised just over $700 toward the event.

“As important as fundraising is, raising awareness about depression and mental health issues is just as important,” said Coordinator Andrea McRae.

CMHA encourages everyone to raise their voices and to be more vocal about depression and other mental health topics. In keeping with the raising of voices, the local group is planning an acapella workshop on May 28 with local vocalist and voice teacher Samantha Taylor. Proceeds from this “by donation” workshop will go to the June. 4 event.

The Agassiz-Harrison Defeat Depression event needs participants to walk, to run, to join in support of a great cause. They need community businesses who want to support the event through sponsorship, promotional opportunities, and participation from their employees.

Information on the acapella workshop, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities is available by contacting Andrea McRae at 604-819-9621.
