Suicide Prevention: Strategies for Helping Yourself and Those You Care About

On Monday February 27, 2017 the Mental Health Association, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the Reel Mind Theatre and Film Series and the Rochester Psychiatric Center will sponsor a free presentation on the topic of suicide prevention.

Dr. Kim Van Orden, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry will present a talk on suicide prevention and strategies for helping yourself and those you care about.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. The goal of suicide prevention is to reduce factors that increase someone's risk for a suicide attempt (e.g., depression) and also to increase factors that promote resilience and coping (e.g., social connectedness). We will discuss facts and myths about suicide and emphasize strategies we can all take to reduce our risk and help reduce the risk of those we care about.

The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. and also include a question and answer period.

The program is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Rochester Psychiatric Center in the Rehabilitation Building at 1111 Elmwood Ave.Rochester. NY. Free parking is provided.

Registration is requested. Call (585) 325-3145 ext.100 to register and for more information.
